Ohio Homeowners Insurance Average Costs

According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), the average cost of a homeowners insurance premium in Ohio is $874. This makes Ohio one of the least expensive states in the country for home insurance, ranking number 44.

According to the III, many factors influence the premiums you pay for insurance in Ohio. Some include:

  • Your home's total square footage: The larger your home, the higher the premiums will likely be.
  • The building costs in your area: These costs include construction type, materials and features that may be added or subtracted from your bottom line.
  • Your home’s location: The local crime rates of your city, especially near your home, can impact your rates.
  • The natural disasters that may occur: Your home’s location might be more at risk for natural disasters, such as tornadoes. Earthquake and flood coverage are excluded, but can be purchased separately.

More About Ohio Home Insurance

Types of Ohio Homeowners Insurance

Home Insurance Ohio Unlike Ohio Car Insurance, homeowners insurance isn't required by law in Ohio. However, if you finance your OH home with a mortgage, your lender may require some type of homeowners insurance coverage.

Most homeowners policies from The Hartford come with a wide range of coverages for different Ohio properties. At The Hartford, we include all of these Ohio home insurance coverages in your policy:

Personal Liability Insurance helps cover your legal defense against a liability claim or lawsuit. This coverage also helps pay for damages you’re liable for. For example, if your pet hurts a neighbor, this coverage can help pay for the injuries.

Dwelling insurance coverage helps protect your home and the structures directly attached to it. Your dwelling coverage can help protect both the inside and outside of your OH home, including its:

  • Heating
  • Air conditioning
  • Roof
  • Siding
  • Walls
  • Flooring
Personal property coverage helps cover furniture, clothing and appliances. You can purchase additional coverage for valuable items and other special possessions. For instance, you may want additional coverage for your jewelry or collectible items.

Loss of use coverage helps pay for your additional living expenses if you can’t live in your home for a time. For instance, if you must stay in a hotel while your home is repaired after a covered loss, this coverage can help pay the bill.

Medical payments coverage helps pay emergency medical bills if someone who is not a regular resident of your home is injured on your OH property. These bills can be covered up to your policy limit, whether you’re legally responsible for the incident or not. It also covers any injury caused by a member of your family or your pet, no matter where it happens.2

Other structures coverage helps protect structures that are not directly attached to your home. For example, if your detached garage is damaged, this coverage can help pay the repair costs.

Additional Ohio Homeowners Insurance Coverages:

Valuable items blanket coverage provides extra coverage for your jewelry, china, crystal, silverware, guns and more. Many homeowners policies cap coverage for theft on jewelry up to a $1,500 limit, but The Hartford’s Valuable Items Blanket Coverage can increase the limit up to $10,000 per item. This coverage can also help cover mysterious disappearances.

“New for old” protection replaces your destroyed belongings with new ones of the same quality. So, if a fire destroys your furniture, we’ll help provide the actual cost to replace them.

Personal injury liability insurance helps cover damages from a slander or libel claim.

Reimbursement for replacing locks helps cover up to $500 to replace locks if your keys get lost or stolen.

Identity fraud expense coverage helps you recover after fraud or identity theft by compensating you for out-of-pocket expenses up to certain limits (see your policy for limits).

Disappearing property deductible,‡‡ which reduces your deductible each year if you go three consecutive years without filing a claim.

Additional Limits coverage helps cover the costs to rebuild your home if it is a total loss, up to 125% of your coverage limits.

Rental property protection plus provides coverage if you’re a landlord with a rental unit. It includes:

  • Replacement costs of your rental

For example, if your dishwasher’s electrical components break down, we can help cover your repair costs. Keep in mind this doesn’t cover normal wear and tear. This benefit also provides coverage if you want to make “green” upgrades. It pays up to 125% of your cost to replace any covered equipment with items that are similar, but more energy efficient or environmentally friendly.
