Getting Home Insurance in Michigan

Homeowners Insurance Michigan Michigan is a beautiful place to call home, however being a homeowner in The Great Lakes State can come with different challenges. Living in The Mitten can mean dealing with unwanted weather that can wreak havoc on your house. If your home is located in the Wolverine State, you might be familiar with the issues that many Michiganders face, including:

  • Fire and lightning
  • Theft
  • Wind
  • Snow and ice
Because these events can cause significant damage to your MI home, you need to have the best homeowners insurance policy in Michigan. It doesn’t matter if you live in Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights or anywhere in between. The AARP® Homeowners Insurance Program from The Hartford1 offers homeowners insurance to help protect your home from financial loss. Michigan homeowners know that harsh winters bring frozen pipes, ice dams and snow. And summers can come with thunderstorms and hail that can damage property.

Michigan Homeowners Insurance Average Costs

According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), the average cost of a homeowners insurance premium in Michigan is $1,002, making Michigan the 35th most expensive state in the country for home insurance.2

Direct premiums written by property/casualty insurance companies in Michigan totaled $22.5 billion in 2022.3

According to the III, many factors can influence the premiums you pay for Michigan homeowners insurance, including:

  • The building costs in your area, factoring in your home’s construction type, premium materials and unique features.
  • Your home’s total square footage.
  • The local crime rates of your city, especially near your home.
  • The likelihood of certain types of disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes.4

Coverage Types for Michigan Homeowners Insurance

Home Insurance Michigan Unlike Michigan car insurance, homeowners insurance isn’t usually required by law. However, if you finance your home with a mortgage in Michigan, your lender will probably require some home insurance coverage to help protect their financial interest in your property.

Most of the Michigan homeowners policies from The Hartford come with a wide array of coverages, like:

Personal Property Coverage helps protect your personal belongings, such as furniture or clothing, after a covered loss. For example, if a fire damages your couch, personal property coverage can help cover the costs to replace or fix it.

Dwelling Coverage helps protect your Michigan home and the structures directly attached to it. Your dwelling coverage can help protect your home inside and out when damaged in a covered loss. For example, if a tree falls on your porch or your home is struck by lightning, dwelling coverage can help cover the repair costs.

Other Structures Coverage to help cover your repair costs if buildings that are not attached to your home get damaged. For example, if someone loses control of their car and crashes into your fence, this coverage can help pay to have it fixed.

Loss of Use Coverage, which helps pay your living expenses if you can’t live in your home while it is being repaired after a covered loss. So, if you need to stay in a hotel for a week because of a fire, this can help pay the bill.

Personal Liability Coverage helps protect you if someone is injured at your home and you’re found liable. It is a crucial coverage and comes standard with homeowners policies. For example, if someone trips over a loose floorboard, your personal liability coverage can help cover the costs of being sued for health care and suffering.

Medical Payments helps protect you if someone is injured on your property. For instance, if someone slips and falls at your house, this can help cover the costs associated with the injury. These medical costs are paid up to your policy’s limit, whether you’re found legally responsible or not.**

More Michigan Homeowners Insurance Coverages:

The AARP Homeowners Insurance Program from The Hartford offers additional coverages that can help increase your level of protection, including:

Equipment Breakdown Coverage helps if you have mechanical or electrical breakdowns of any systems in your home. For example, heating, air conditioning and your appliances can be covered. It also provides coverage if you want to make “green” upgrades. It pays up to 125% of your cost to replace any covered equipment with items that are similar, but more energy efficient or environmentally friendly.  Keep in mind, this does not cover normal wear and tear.

“New for Old” Protection‡ to help replace your destroyed possessions with brand new ones of the same quality.

Disappearing Property Deductible,‡‡ which lowers your deductible each year when you go three consecutive years with a clean claims history.

Valuable Items Blanket provides extra coverage for your valuables. While your homeowners policy caps coverage for theft of jewelry up to $1,500, The Hartford’s valuable items blanket coverage can increase the limit to $10,000 per item. It can also extend coverage for lost items or damaged valuables. This coverage can include jewelry, china, crystal, silverware, guns and more. For example, if someone steals your $3,000 necklace from your home, valuable items blanket coverage can help pay to replace the necklace. Without this coverage, you’d only receive $1,500.

Full Replacement Cost pays the full cost to rebuild your home if it is a total loss up to 125% of your coverage limits.

Rental Property Protection Plus provides protection for you as a landlord for rental units you own and includes the replacement cost of your rental dwelling and loss of rental income if your home is damaged in a covered loss.
